Verbatim, a pioneer of data storage technology, has announced the launch of its PRIMALLOY® 3D printer filament. The highly advanced material is an important addition to the company’s portfolio of 3D printing consumables, complementing the recently announced availability of its top-grade range of PLA and ABS plastic filaments.

The new PRIMALLOY material is a thermoplastic ester elastomer (TPEE) that delivers improved flexibility and rubber elasticity compared to standard TPEE materials. In particular, it provides high-performance characteristics in terms of mechanical strength and resistance to oil, chemicals, flex fatigue and heat, in addition to offering excellent low temperature properties and a high level of hardness stability across a wide temperature range, all of which make it a highly attractive choice for deployment in 3D printing solutions.

Key application segments for this advanced material include automotive components, such as door latches or electrical connector boots, and in a myriad of devices in home or industrial settings such as toothbrushes, goggles or buttons, or hand grips for electrical/consumer devices including power tools or mobile phones.

In addition to PRIMALLOY and its existing top brand filament products, Verbatim’s parent company, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC), is developing many unique materials that will broaden the Verbatim 3D printer filament range in the future.  MCC has a long and expansive history in developing materials for many engineering applications, particularly in industrial, medical, automotive, and consumer sectors, among others.

PRIMALLOY will be available to buy from Verbatim in December 2014. It will join the Verbatim’s PLA and ABS materials which are available in 1.75/3mm and 1.75mm diameter filaments, respectively. Both the PLA and ABS filaments are already sold in an assortment of vibrant colours as 1kg spools. The products are manufactured in Japan from the highest quality materials and produced to extremely tight tolerances to ensure consistent feed and stable printing. The filaments will be distributed in vacuum-sealed bags with desiccant, and wound onto a spool for trouble free dispensing.

Verbatim's PRIMALLOY filament was demonstrated on their booth at IFA in Berlin last week.
